Es
begann mit einer zufälligen Begegnung in einem<br>
Pankower Treppenhaus, aus der Freundschaft wurde.<br>
Durch diese entstand schließlich das Projekt <strong>breathe</strong>.<br>
Karin Helmstaedt und Judith Engel fanden durch ge-<br>
meinsame musikalische Vorlieben zu einem eigenen<br>
Repertoire.</p>
<p>Ihr erstes Programm im Juni 2001 hieß »Our Favou-<br>
rites« und bestand ausschließlich aus Cover-Versionen.<br>
Doch aus dem Duo wurde bald mehr. Zusammen mit<br>
Rainer Schnös als Arrangeur und Produzenten wurden<br>
eigene Songs komponiert und mit Gastmusikern einge-<br>
spielt. <strong>breathe</strong> konnte inzwischen zahlreiche
Live-<br>
Erfahrungen sammeln und erlebte im November 2003<br>
in ihrem »Geburtsort« Pankow ihr Debüt als Band. <br>
It
all began in a stairwell in Berlin’s eastern district of<br>
Pankow. Karin Helmstaedt and Judith Engel discovered<br>
they were neighbours and by the end of afternoon tea<br>
they were fast friends. The idea for <strong>breathe</strong> came about<br>
late one night after much wine and an inspired singsong<br>
with the kids – the resulting project is the realisation of a<br>
longtime dream for both of them.</p>
<p>In June of 2001 they performed their first program entitled<br>
»Our Favourites«, made up entirely of covers. With the first<br>
stirrings of their own songs, Rainer Schnoes came on board<br>
to make the duo a trio. With his contribution as composer<br>
and arranger, <strong>breathe</strong> developed its own repertoire; in No-<br>
vember 2003 they made their first appearance in Berlin with<br>
a full-fledged band of guest musicians.</p>
<p><strong>Karin Helmstaedt</strong><br>
studierte Literatur in Toronto, Montreal und Paris. <br>
Seit 1993 arbeitet sie als freie Journalistin und <br>
Moderatorin. Sie lebt seit 1998 in Berlin.</p>
<p><strong>Judith Engel</strong><br>
studierte klassischen Gesang in Berlin und ist seit <br>
1992 in freien und festen Engagements in Berlin <br>
(Deutsche Oper; Rundfunkchor Berlin) tätig.</p>
<p><strong>Rainer Schnös</strong><br>
studierte Musik in Essen und Hamburg und ist <br>
seit 2001 Mitglied des Rundfunkchors Berlin.<br>
