Es
begann mit einer zufälligen Begegnung in einem<br>
Pankower Treppenhaus, aus der Freundschaft wurde.<br>
Durch diese entstand schließlich das Projekt <strong>breathe</strong>.<br>
Karin Helmstaedt und Judith Engel fanden durch ge-<br>
meinsame musikalische Vorlieben zu einem eigenen<br>
Repertoire.</p>
<p>Ihr erstes Programm im Juni 2001 hieß »Our Favou-<br>
rites« und bestand ausschließlich aus Cover-Versionen.<br>
Doch aus dem Duo wurde bald mehr. Zusammen mit<br>
Rainer Schnös als Arrangeur und Produzenten wurden<br>
eigene Songs komponiert und mit Gastmusikern einge-<br>
spielt. <strong>breathe</strong> konnte inzwischen zahlreiche
Live-<br>
Erfahrungen sammeln und erlebte im November 2003<br>
in ihrem »Geburtsort« Pankow ihr Debüt als Band. <br>
It
all began in a stairwell in Berlin’s eastern district of<br>
Pankow. Karin Helmstaedt and Judith Engel discovered<br>
they were neighbours and by the end of afternoon tea<br>
they were fast friends. The idea for <strong>breathe</strong> came about<br>
late one night after much wine and an inspired singsong<br>
with the kids – the resulting project is the realisation of a<br>
longtime dream for both of them.</p>
<p>In June of 2001 they performed their first program entitled<br>
»Our Favourites«, made up entirely of covers. With the first<br>
stirrings of their own songs, Rainer Schnoes came on board<br>
to make the duo a trio. With his contribution as composer<br>
and arranger, <strong>breathe</strong> developed its own repertoire; in No-<br>
vember 2003 they made their first appearance in Berlin with<br>
a full-fledged band of guest musicians.</p>
<p><strong><h2>Karin Helmstaedt</h2></strong><br>
studierte Literatur in Toronto, Montreal und Paris. <br>
Seit 1993 arbeitet sie als freie Journalistin und <br>
Moderatorin. Sie lebt seit 1998 in Berlin.</p>
<p><strong><h2>Judith Engel</h2></strong><br>
studierte klassischen Gesang in Berlin und ist seit <br>
1992 in freien und festen Engagements in Berlin <br>
(Deutsche Oper; Rundfunkchor Berlin) tätig.</p>

studierte Musik in Essen und Hamburg und ist <br>
seit 2001 Mitglied des Rundfunkchors Berlin.<br>

<p><strong><h2>Rainer Schnoes</h2></strong><br>
studied music in Essen and Hamburg; in 2001 he became<br>
a full time member of the Berlin Radio Choir.<br>
</p>Denis
Jabusch</p>
<p>in Annweiler/Rheinland-Pfalz geboren, ging 1994 nach Berlin,<br>
um E-Bass bei Max Hughes und Kontrabass bei Ed Schuller<br>
an der Hochschule für Musik »Hanns Eisler« zu studieren.</p>
<p>Inzwischen gehört er »längst zum festen ... Inventar der
Szene<br>
in Berlin« (Zitty), denn seine Bandbreite reicht von traditionel-<br>
lem Jazz über Latin bis zu modernen elektron. Musikstilen wie<br>
z.B. House, Drum & Bass und Trip Hop.</p>
<p>Er trat, außer in Berliner Clubs, bei einigen Festivals im In-<br>
und Ausland (Jazzopen Stuttgart, Try-Tone-Festival Amster-<br>
dam, Lowlands-Festival/Niederlande, Przystanek Wood-<br>
stock/Polen u.a.) auf. Außerdem sammelte er Erfahrungen als<br>
Theatermusiker in der Produktion »Saints and Singing«<br>
(R. Wilson/H.-P.
Kuhn).</p><p><strong><a href="http://www.denis-jabusch.de/" target="_blank" class="fliesstext">Denis
Jabusch</a> </strong></p>
<p>hails from Annweiler in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz; he went<br>
to Berlin in 1994 to study bass guitar with Max Hughes and<br>
double bass with Ed Schuller at the Academy of Music<br>
»Hanns Eisler«.</p>
<p>In the meantime he’s part of the furniture in Berlin’s lively<br>
club music scene – he plays everything from traditional Jazz<br>
to Latin to electronic music (House, Drum & Bass, Trip Hop)<br>
and has performed at numerous festivals both in and outside<br>
of Germany (Jazzopen Stuttgart, Try-Tone-Festival Amster-<br>
dam, Lowlands Festival/Netherlands, Przystanek Woodstock/<br>
Poland).</p>
<p><strong>Elmar
Krick</strong></p>
<p> began his musical career with studies in classical saxophone<br>
and sound engineering at the University of Music Düsseldorf.<br>
He then went on to study jazz in Hamburg with Roman<br>
Schwaller and Peter Weniger, taking part in numerous work-<br>
shops with the likes of Joe Lovano and Jimmy Heath.</p>
<p>Never lacking for projects, Elmar has played with the Dusko<br>
Gojkovic Munich Big Band, the Harald Rueschenbaum Jazz<br>
Orchestra and is Lead Altist with the Munich Lounge Lizards.<br>
He also heads the Saxophone Quartet <a href="http://www.munich-saxophone-department.de" target="_blank" class="fliesstextlink">»Munich
Saxophone<br>
Department«</a> and the Jazz Quintet »House of Jade«.</p>
<p><strong>Elmar
Krick</strong></p>
<p>
studierte zunächst klassisches Saxophon und Tonmeister an der<br>
Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Düsseldorf. Es folgten ein Jazz-<br>
Aufbaustudium an der Hamburger Musikhochschule bei Roman<br>
Schwaller und Peter Weniger sowie zahlreiche Workshops (u.a.<br>
bei Joe Lovano und Jimmy Heath).</p>
<p>Er spielte u. a. mit der Dusko Gojkovic Munich Bigband, dem<br>
Harald Rüschenbaum Jazz Orchestra und ist der aktuelle Lead<br>
Altist der Munich Lounge Lizards. Außerdem leitet er das Saxo-<br>
phon-Quartett <a href="http://www.munich-saxophone-department.de" target="_blank" class="fliesstextlink">»Munich
Saxophone Department«</a> und das Jazz-<br>
Quintett »House of Jade«.</p><br>
<p><strong>Erich Gramshammer</strong></p>
<p>studierte akustische und E-Gitarre am »Hilversums Conserva-<br>
torium« und am »Berklee College of Music« in Boston.</p>
<p>Er besitzt umfangreiche Erfahrungen als Live- wie als Studio-<br>
musiker und spielte bei zahlreichen internationalen Band-Acts<br>
und in Musiktheater-Produktionen, wie z. B. »Dominique<br>
Horwitz singt Jacques Brel«, »Leise kommt die Nacht« mit<br>
Ulrich Tukur, »Einen Dichter denken – Laut« mit Ulrich Mühe<br>

Österreich, die Schweiz, Italien, in die Niederlande, auf die<br>

<p><strong>Erich Gramshammer</strong></p>

Conservatory in the Netherlands and at Berklee College<br>
of Music in Boston.</p>
<p>He has extensive experience performing both live and in<br>
the studio with numerous international bands and musical<br>
theatre productions, including »Dominique Horwitz sings<br>
Jacques Brel«, »Leise kommt die Nacht« with Ulrich<br>
Tukur, »Einen Dichter denken – Laut« with Ulrich Mühe<br>
and »Oh Die See« at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg.</p>
<p>He has also toured with projects in Germany, Austria,<br>
Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, the Maledives,<br>
and the US.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.wolkenpumpe.de" target="_blank" class="fliesstextlink">Ferdinand
von Seebach</a></strong></p>
<p>geboren 1970 in Hamburg, studierte Jazzposaune und Schul-<br>
musik an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.</p>
<p>Er war als Pianist, Posaunist und musikalischer Leiter an ver-<br>
schiedenen Theatern in Norddeutschland engagiert.<br>
Als Jazzposaunist spielte, arrangierte und komponierte er für<br>
namhafte Big Bands, darunter die Civica Jazz Band Milano,<br>
die NDR Big Band und andere.<br>
Im Kleinkunstbereich arbeitete er als Klavierbegleiter, Sän-<br>
ger, Komponist und Bandleader mit Lutz von Rosenberg-<br>
Lipinsky, Tini Prüfert, Robert Gernhardt und anderen. <br>
Seit 1999 ist er fester Bestandteil der Etta Scollo Band.</p>
<p>Nach einem zweijährigen Aufenthalt in Mailand lebt er heute<br>
in Berlin.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.wolkenpumpe.de" target="_blank" class="fliesstextlink">Ferdinand
von Seebach</a></strong></p>
<p>was born in Hamburg in 1970. He studied at the Univer-<br>
sity of Music and Theatre Hamburg with a specialty in jazz<br>
trombone and since then has worked as a musical director,<br>
pianist, and trombone player at a number of theatres in nor-<br>
thern Germany.</p>
<p>In addition to composing and arranging for renowned big<br>
bands such as the Civica Jazz Band in Milan, Italy, and the<br>
NDR Big Band (Hamburg), he also plays piano accompani-<br>
ment, sings and composes alongside Lutz von Rosenberg-<br>
Lipinsky, Tini Prüfert and Robert Gernhardt.<br>
Since 1999 he’s toured and recorded extensively with Etta<br>
Scollo.</p>
<p>He lives in Berlin.</p>
<p><strong>Oliver
Fach</strong></p>
<p>Jahrgang 1968, geboren und aufgewachsen in Berlin,<br>
studierte ebenda von 1992 - 97 E-Gitarre an der HfM<br>
»Hanns Eisler«. Seither ist er bei zahlreichen Live- und<br>
Studioprojekten im Jazz- und Popbereich (z. B. »Angel's<br>
Delight«, »Menthel«) sowie als Theatermusiker (z. B.<br>
»Das weite Theater«, Metropol Theater) erfolgreich.</p>
<p>Die Arbeit als Bigbandarrangeur für »The Blue Notes«<br>
sowie für das Rolf-von-Nordenskjold-Orchestra und<br>
als Autor des Kindermusikbuches »Toni Sombrero und<br>
der alte Matador« erweitern sein Betätigungsfeld.</p>
<p> Im April 2004 stieg er bei breathe ein.</p>
<p><strong>Oliver
Fach</strong></p>
<p>was born in 1968 in Berlin. He studied electric guitar at the<br>
Academy of Music »Hanns Eisler« and since then has been<br>
involved in numerous live and studio projects playing both<br>
jazz and pop.</p>
<p>He has also worked in theatre, as an arranger for big bands<br>
(The Blue Notes, Rolf von Nordenskjold Orchestra) and<br>
authored a children’s music book, »Toni Sombrero und der<br>
alte Matador«.</p>
<p>He joined breathe in April 2004.</p>
<p><strong>Tilman
Person</strong></p>
<p>erhielt ab dem 7. Lebensjahr klass. Klavier- und mit 15 Schlag-<br>
zeugunterricht. Er studierte Schlagzeug an der HfM »Hanns<br>
Eisler« und am Jazzdepartement der UdK Berlin. Weitere<br>
Studienaufenthalte führten ihn nach Graz und New York.</p>
<p>Zur Aufnahme einer Dozententätigkeit an der Universidad<br>
Javeriana ging TP 2002 für eineinhalb Jahre nach Bogota/<br>
Kolumbien, wo er sich neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit intensiv mit<br>
der dortigen Folklore bzw. überregionalen Musikstilen wie<br>
Salsa und Tango beschäftigte.<br>
<br>
TP arbeitet seit Anfang der 90er Jahre mit unterschiedlichen<br>
Bands, meist aus der Berliner Szene. Daneben wirkte er bei<br>
Theaterproduktionen, Hörspielen, Varietees und Kreuzfahrten<br>
mit. </p><p><strong>Tilman
Person</strong></p>
<p>Tilman Person studied music at the Academy of Music<br>
»Hanns Eisler« in Berlin, followed by a specialty in jazz at<br>
the University of the Arts (Berlin).<br>
Other stations on his musical journey took him to Graz and<br>
New York – a teaching position at the Universidad Javeriana<br>
in Bogota in 2002 sparked a deeper interest in Latin musical<br>
styles, such as Salsa and Tango.</p>
<p>Since the early 1990s he’s worked as a freelance drummer<br>
with numerous bands mostly from the Berlin music scene – he<br>
has also performed with countless theatre productions,<br>
Varietés and on cruise ships.</p>

The <h1>breathe project</h1> came together like the unreflected action
of the word itself: a deep breath before diving in…head first
into dreams that had been loitering on the outskirts of reality
for far too long.
It all began in a stairwell in Berlin’s eastern district of Pankow.
Canadian-born Karin Helmstaedt and Judith Engel, a soprano
with Berlin’s prestigious Radio Choir, discovered they were
neighbors. By the end of afternoon tea they were fast friends,
and making plans for the first of many communal dinners.
Late one night after much wine and an inspired singsong with the kids
– it turns out they had both grown up singing along to the same
Joan Baez record! – they decided to act. Within a few weeks they
had rallied together some local guitar virtuosi and were practicing
like mad, working out harmonies for a selection of their favorite
pop and folk songs.
Six months later, in June of 2001, they performed their first
minimalist program of vocals and guitar, made up entirely of covers.
By the end of the summer, Karin was scribbling away at her own songs,
at which point Rainer Schnoes came on board to make the duo a trio.
With his contribution as composer and arranger, breathe developed
its own repertoire; in November 2003 they made their first
appearance in Berlin with a six-man band of seasoned musicians.
The next step was to preserve the work for posterity. After months
of recording in and around Berlin – and painstaking learning by doing -
the band sidestepped the issue of finding a label by founding its own.
Forest of Arden is proud to present breathe’s debut album
"afterward," a labor of love and learning, and most certainly,
just a beginning.
